What is Normal Aging?

As you get older, you may notice some subtle changes taking place in your body. Many changes are normal, and are not harmful. Always schedule annual visits with your physician, and be sure to ask them about any new changes or concerns.

Some changes occur in your physical appearances, such as greying or thinning hair, or wrinkles. Other common signs of aging include:

  • Heart and Cardiovascular System: Your heart begins to work harder, as your blood vessels and heart begin to stiffen.
  • Bones, Joints, and Muscles: Bones shrink in size and density around age 35. You may notice that you are not as tall as you used to be. As your muscles lose flexibility and endurance, you may become less coordinated and lose balance.
  • Skin: As you age, your skin thins and becomes more fragile. You may bruise more easily and notice wrinkles, age spots, and skin tags (small growths).
  • Bladder: You may notice using the bathroom more often as you age. Increased frequency in urination is due to the weakening of the bladder and pelvic floor muscles. In men, an enlarged prostate can cause incontinence.
  • Memory: It’s normal for healthy older adults to occasionally forget recent events, such as the placement of items or names of people.
